Volunteering with Everytown America 11/13/15

On November 13, my group and I decided to volunteer for Everytown America, which is one of the more well-known gun violence prevention groups in America. Our job was to hand out fliers notifying everyone on how to call Congress and demand stricter gun laws. We all met on the corner of 40th and 6th Avenue, waiting patiently as Flynn took a little longer than expected. We then went looking around Bryant Park for the Everytown volunteers. We went around the park once, not seeing them. But, when we searched a second time, we saw the volunteers handing out fliers. We talked with them for a couple of minutes, learned what we needed to do, and started handing out fliers. At first, all of us were a little reluctant to do it, but eventually, we became more open and more out-going. Then, a woman named Marie came and told us how to become a little more sociable with the members of the public we were trying to persuade. There are many things that she taught me about going out in public and not being afraid if the person who you are talking to at first wants nothing to do with you. For example, she taught me to always have a smile on my face, even if someone said no at first. She also taught us to be respectful of people’s time. We handed out fliers until we were empty-handed, then proceeded to get more fliers and work even more. Once the second batch of fliers were gone, we took a couple pictures, and were on our way. This was one of the most valuable fieldwork projects that we have done so far. I feel really proud to say that I have done this because I think that more people became aware of the thing that we were pushing, which was gun safety. I think that this impacted our group because after that, we were on a roll with fieldworks. We still are on that roll. The organization, Everytown, I definitely  hope to get in contact with again. I also think that this is a valuable fieldwork for the Teach-In because we can possibly have one of the higher-ups in the organization come and speak with us. Here are some pictures from the fieldwork.

Will

Hello, my name is Will Bompey, and I am an eighth grader at Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School. My group's topic is gun violence prevention. I chose this topic because I feel like there are too many massacres, and we are becoming numb to that as a society.
