The Scorch Trials by James Dashner

This book is called Scorch Trials by James Dashner. The characters are the Thomas and the Gladers. (Well actually Thomas is a glader) The Gladers are the kids that got dumped in the Glade with their no memory. In this book it turns out that the Maze is part one in a series of tests a weird organization called WICKED. The Glade is inside giant maze that opens in the morning and closes at night. Thomas mostly worries about his own problems because after they get these tattoos that tells them their place in the group all Thomas thinks about is how his tattoo says “to be killed by group B.” The setting of this book is in future America where there are sun flares that give people diseases that turn people into cranks and when you’re a full blown crank you go crazy.

Spoiler! Don’t Read The Second Paragraph If You Haven’t Read The Book

Thomas’s main problem is that he has a disease called the flare and needs to go 100 miles north to get to a safe haven where there’s a cure. An important event is when a hurricane strikes and kills lots of gladers. Another big event is when Thomas gets kidnapped by group B and Teresea is in charge of the group. Teresea is the only girl glader who Thomas can talk to in his mind if she also wants to. That is important because that means Teresea betrayed him. Also, a big event is when Thomas sees Teresea and kisses her. I think that Teresea betrayed him because of this quote: “The betrayal meant he couldn’t trust her anymore, and his heart told him he couldn’t forgive her.”

I enjoyed this book because most of the time it kept you on your toes and because it had lots of action. I would recommend this book to people who like mystery because this book is pretty mysterious. It is mysterious because the character doesn’t know a lot about the world he’s in. I would also recommend this book to people who like action because it has lots of action. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Legend by Marie Lu

Legend by Marie Lu

The main characters in Legend are June and Day. Day is very loyal to his family members because he risked stealing from a heavily guarded hospital with only two knives to get the medications his brother needs. June is very smart because she got 1500 on her trial. In the Republic Of America you get a trial when you’re ten. You score anywhere from 0-1500 on your trial. Depending on what you get on your trial you either die, get to go to a high school and a college, or go to a high school and get a choice of the top four colleges. The trial determines whether your smart or dumb. June is the only person to get a 1500. June wants to hunt Day down because she thinks he killed her brother, Metias This book is set in the Republic Of America which is at war with the Colonies Of America.

Day’s main problem is that he’s a most wanted criminal but he needs to make a ton of money to get his brother the cure to the plague he got. Junes main problem is that her brother just died and she left college to join the military. June is fifteen. An important event is when Day steals from a hospital and people think he killed June’s brother so June hunts him down. Another important event is when June goes on a website that her brother made and the website tells her the truth about the capitol. The website tells her a everything that’s bad about the capitol. Day knew all  of it way before her. Legend is all about rebels because the main characters are rebels against the Capitol.“If you want to rebel, rebel from inside the system. That’s much more powerful than rebelling outside the system.” – Metias before he died. I think this means that if you rebel outside of the government they can just shut you out, but if you rebel from inside it’s harder to shut you out because you might have supporters that are in the military or someone that is powerful.

I definitely liked Legend. It had a lot of action (which I like) and it really kept me on my toes, like I couldn’t wait for the next part. I also liked it because it is very interesting to see from two totally different points of view. I would recommend this book to people who like dystopias and action because it is a dystopia with lots of action. I would also recommend this to people who like knowing a story from both sides because June doesn’t know about all the bad things and only knows about the military and lives in a rich sector. Day on the other hand knows all about the bad stuff the capitol does and lives in a slum sector.

I would give this five stars because it kept me on my toes and had lots of interesting twists in the plot.

Spy School by Stuart Gibbs

This book is about a kid named Ben Ripley. He is in 5th grade. He is very smart but has a life that is filled with boringness and no enthusiasm. Alexander Hale opens the door to Ben’s life and offers him the key to adventure, action and most important to an enthusiastic fulfilling life.

“Thus, a mere twenty-three minutes after my arrival at spy school, I had learned something extremely important about it: it was not going to be easy.” (p.30)

Spy School is a book filled with tons of action, but this action is all about smarts. If you’re on grade 16 in math and you check the spy school website I am sure you will qualify for the school. Spy School is covered as a “Science School“.

Part of the expectation from the school  is to be ready for everything… EVERYTHING.

My favorite part of the book was when Ben arrived at the school because: When Ben meets his first friends and enemies trouble awaits. When Ben arrives at Spy School the action kicks in and from there on the book pulls you in by each word.

Ben is in love with a girl named Elizabeth Pasternak. But when Ben goes to spy school he is in for a treat. Spy school is a great book to read for people who like action, adventure and a little bit of mystery.

Wyatt recommended this book to me, and I am recommending it to people who have the interests of the subjects above.

Spy training.

Protective spys.

Young spys

Secret information.

Covert operation.

Handy training.

Old school cover as science school.

Opertive.

Little people.

This book is definitely 5stars because it has everything you want in an action adventure book. By the way if you do not have a book to read ask Wyatt and I swear you will love the books he will recommend!

The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan

WARNING!!!! DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW UNLESS YOU ARE NOT PLANNING TO READ THE OLYMPIANS SERIES OR ARE ON THE FIRST OR SECOND BOOK!!!!

imgresThe Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan is in my favorite series of all time, The Olympians Series! The main characters are: Percy Jackson son of Poseidon, Grover Underwood the satyr, Annabeth Chase daughter of Athena, Thalia Grace daughter of Zeus, and Bianca and Nico di Angelo. The setting is Camp Half Blood. And everywhere they go on the quest.

Percy is in the car with Annabeth and Thalia, and of course his mom is telling embarrassing stories from when he was a baby. Anyway, Percy, Annabeth, and Thalia are on their way to a military school called Westover Hall because Grover told them that he found two half-bloods. (Half Greek God half human). When Percy finally finds the two di Angelo kids, they are gone and so are his friends.

My favorite part of the book is when Percy, Annabeth, Thalia, Grover, and Zöe are a the Hoover Dam and Percy, Annabeth, Thalia, and Grover are saying, “ I’m going to buy some Dam french fries. And I’m going to use the Dam bathroom! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!” And Zöe talks in thou thee language and she doesn’t get it.

To find out what happens next, READ THE BOOK!!!! I  DARE YOU!!!!(I recommend reading the first and second book before this…)

I recommend this book to people who like to get sucked into books, magical realism, realistic fiction, action, and adventure. I rate this book (100 stars)  but I can only do  so that will do.

Hazardous Tales By Nathon Hale

STK467245

Hazardous Tales by Nathan Hale which is funny because there was a spy named Nathan Hale in The Revolutionary War who is the main character in this book. It is about Nathan Hale ( the spy) who is about to be hanged on something called a gallows and the stories he tells to the hangman and a redcoat (English soldiers named after their red coats). It takes place in an English territory in 1779 during the American Revolution.

Nathan Hales one problem is that he has but one life to give for his country. ( A Nathan hale quote ” My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country” ). This book is about the entire revolution two main parts are when Nathan becomes the spy and when he gets slammed in The Big Giant Book of American History. It is very interesting because pretty much everything is true.

I would recommend this book to someone who likes humor and wars because it is about a war.If you like to learn while you are reading you should read it. I give it five out of five stars. *****I because of all the positive things I said in this review.

Emily Windsnap and the Sirens Secret, by Liz Kessler

Over spring break I read the third book in the Emily windsnap series, The Sirens Secret by Liz Kessler. The main character in the Emily  windsnap  series is of of course Emily. Aaron and Shona are Emily’s best friends and are with Emily throughout the story. Emily has a crush on Aaron which makes things really awkward between them.  Emily is a loyal friend, determined, funny and shy towards new people. The setting of the book is mostly in the water because well the main character is a mermaid. Emily’s mom is a human so the story of course takes place on land too.  If you have not read any of the books on this series I would suggest reading the book reviews on the first and seconded books.

UnknownOne day Emily and Shona are really bored so Shona advises that Emily and herself go to see the lost sirens. A siren is a mermaid that attacks fishing boats that come into certain parts of the sea, they lore the fishermen into the sea bringing them to instant deaths by their siren songs. Anyway shins went looking for the lost sirens and decided to split up.  Emily was swimming along when she felt a strange current pulling her into what looked like an old well. Emily made the decision to jump into the well which led her to the lost sirens. At first when Emily met the sirens they seemed so nice and gentle. But after a while their soft tone turned into an impatient sharp tone that was when Emily had a feeling that the sirens were slowly but forcing her to do something, but Emily wasn’t sure

what that thing was…at least not yet. SING! Emily was not told why she had to sing but some feeling inside her told her to do what the sirens said or else… After a few hours Emily remembered about Shona, she had to find her. As Emily was remembering Shona guess who shot herself down that well, no one but Shona. They tried to go up the well but soon realized they were trapped they had to get out some how…

One important part is Emily’s big problem problem but that is in the paragraph above so another important part which so happens to be my favorite part too. When Mr. Beaston discovers the truth about his past. With the help of Emily, Shona, and Aaron a secret of a lie is on covered. This is an very emot

ional scene when all the most of the characters help one another that’s one of the good things about the Emily windsnap series. The books are all about love, friendship, and how important helping others is.

I really enjoyed this book because of its messages and the little problems that come up here and there. People who like sad books, books about friendship, love and and a little bit of mystery this book is for you. One of my favorite quotes in this book is “So what are we supposed to do now?” I like that quote because when something goes wrong Emily assumes that someone else is always supposed to have a backup plan. I would give this book ***** out of ***** stars.

Taggerung, By Brian Jacques

This is a book from the Redwall series. It is called Taggerung. This book is about a young otter whose father was slain by vermin. These vermin took him in, and named him their taggerung. A taggerung is a beast who is very fast, very strong, and extremely dangerous. Taggerungs also have very good eyesight, hearing, and tracking skills. When this taggerung leaves the vermin clan because the chief Sawney Rath was becoming too dangerous for his own good, he goes off adventuring and eventually ends up at Redwall Abbey.

The main characters are Tagg, ( The taggerung) Nimbalo, ( a harvest mouse) Mhera, (Tagg’s older sister) Cregga Badgermum, ( The abbey’s caretaker) and Filorn ( Tagg and Mhera’s mother). This book takes place in Mossflower Woodlands.

A very important thing is that Taggerung goes through a change to find his real self. The taggerung realizes that he is not a vermin, and he has things that he wants to do anyway. Here is what the taggerung told Sawney Rath when he left. “ I no longer want to be with you or your clan, Sawney. You’ve become too dangerous for your own good. I’ve watched you change over the seasons from a clan chief, to a bad old beast. I go my own way now. our paths will never cross again, so I wish you better times and hope you learn to treat others more wisely.”

When Tagg leaves Sawney’s band, there are many plot twists. One of them introduces a very important character, Nimbalo. Tagg and Nimbalo become very good friends, and they are usually found together, having adventures.

I enjoyed this book a lot, and I would totally rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book to people who like funniness, action, animal perspective, and don’t mind a bit of violence. Also, you should be prepared for a little tiny bit of grossness. But other than that, I think that this book should be a movie so that we could watch it! That would be awesome!

This is the cover of Taggerung. The otter on the cover is the Taggerung.

Spy School By Stuart Gibbs

Spy School is about a boy named Benjamin Ripley. He is a normal kid, he likes to play sports etc. until… One day a agent in the CIA comes to his house and asks him to apply to a ‘science school’ which is really a secret CIA training camp. He is so excited and he says yes but there is one problem. He can’t tell his parents that it’s a secret CIA training facility. His parents are psyched that he got into a new school but they want to check it out. Ben has a tough time saying no to his parents. Because in the book it says “It was a hard choice to leave my parents but I wanted to be in the CIA so I said yes.”

He went to the school and as soon as he got there there was an attack by the enemy. He went into the nearest building and found a girl crouching there. Ben asked her what she was doing there and she said that she was one of the students at the school. Then the girl gave Ben a Taser. Then they snuck out of the building and went to the building where the principals office was. I don’t want to tell more about this because there will be spoilers.

I will give this book 1,000,000 out of 10 stars because it kept me on my toes waiting for something else to happen. I would recommend this book to 4th-5th graders because third graders wouldn’t understand the book and 6th graders wouldn’t like. I would also reccomend this book to people who like mysteries.

Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere, by Julie T. Lamana

(“Advanced Readers Copy”, being published April 2014)

Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere is a amazing book by Julie T. Lamana. The main character is Armani Curtis. Armani is looking forward to one thing: her 10th birthday. Armani and her mom, dad, grandmother Memaw, Brother Gorgeie, Sister Seally, and a brother Kheelin, and sister Khayla, who are about two years old live in New Orleans, in the Lower 9’s.

Then, the family hears about this hurricane Katrina, and says there’s gonna be no damage. But, they are wrong. Once the storm starts, Armani knows she will have to be brave, watch loved ones die, and have to help the family survive this horrible storm.

Armani learns while the storm is wrecking her life, that she has to help her family survive this storm, even though bad things happen, she has to fight them away and help out, then maybe come back to it. Her idea is to somehow find lost family members, and what used to be her home. “For the first time in my whole life, I felt unsafe in a place where I’d always know, no matter what, I was going to be safe.” On the blurb (back of book). Before the storm, Armani was safe in her home with her family.  Once the storm hit, she lost some family and security.  Then she didn’t feel safe in the place that always felt safe to her. The aftermath of this storm made her brave.

I enjoyed the book, because sometimes it was pretty sad, and then, it eventually got better. Also, there was one big problem, and there was another small problem, which might have got solved, and then there was another one, and maybe the big one got solved at the end… Read it to find out! I would recommend the book for 10+ because it was sort of hard to take in sometimes, and it was pretty intense sometimes. I would rate this infinity stars because it was so good. I like the authors writing style because it gave me a better sense of what was going on in the book, and it was very clear. And, the characters are really interesting. (This storm is real, and it was pretty bad. This book might be a little different when it is published, so be aware.)
