Critical Reflection #4: Connect to outside sources (article/book/podcast/ted talk/blog/website/etc)

What is the relationship between concept and execution in fashion?

My source that I connected to was Ru pual’s drag race. It’s one of the most popular reality shows on air right now and one of the only mainstream shows that has a mostly queer cast. While it does have its controversies, with Ru and the producers of the show not casting trans queens and when they do not portray them in the best light. Nonetheless, no one can deny the institution that is drag race or how it permanently changed drag, for better or for worse. I have been watching the show for about 6 years now and as many queer peoples in america, it has become a staple in my life. The way the show, and drag in general, have so many aspects to them it’s the truly awe inspiring part for me. To be America’s next drag superstar you not only have to be impeccable at drag make-up, be able to sew, have style, bring pounds of clothes, have good wigs, be able act, do impersonations and so much more. While not every drag queen is a master at everyone of these areas, the best queens are proficient in each category. Though I think this philosophy can carry over to almost anything. In fashion you have to understand color theory, be able to pick out good patterns, sew, tailor, be able to present and sell your garment. My goal in life, as a designer, would be to be at least proficient in all of these categories, and any new ones I come across.
