Critical Reflection 4

Throughout this experience, there have been a lot of different experiences that have brought into question my essential question and the way I have framed it.  Throughout this process my essential question has been does using hand tools and traditional woodworking methods to make a bass create a strong artistic connection between me and the instrument? One experience that recently made me think about the connection I talk about in my essential question was when I had to hollow out the body of the bass. I started hollowing out the body using a forcencr bit and a brace and bit drill, drilling out one-inch holes into the body, each hole took about 10 minutes, and I drilled 28 holes into the body all by hand. Then removing the rest of the material with the chisels process was slow and physically taxing and although I wasn’t putting that effort into the artistic or esthetic aspect of the project the effort I was putting into it greatened my connection between me and the instrument I was building. After the first hour, there was almost a zen that came with the repetitive and simple task I had to do.
