Arlo – Update 4

4/24

Today we finally finished the setup for the forge area. We have finished the bricks, the structure, the post for the leg vise, the forge, and the anvil stumps. Looking back on how much work we have done and how many hours we have put in, this is extremely gratifying. The delay has made me even more excited to start forging, and the fact that we made all of the things to make this possible outdoors is even more so exciting. However, I feel that this process has not taught me much about sustainability in design. I am confident in saying that we made our best effort to sustainably source materials, and I am proud of what we did, but I feel that that should be basic practice, and is not what I am getting from this project. Of course I have been thinking about sustainability, but I am much more attracted to the technical side of the project. I do not want to try and juice answers from an experience that is not related to the questions I have been asking. My passions for sustainability and crafts can certainly cross over seamlessly, but for the most part are disparate in this setting. I hope that new ideas and questions arise as the project goes on.
