Another topic that stood out to me this week was the influence of privatization in the food industry and how it affects food sustainability. In most of the major industries, including live livestock and fisheries, big companies dominate the market while smaller operations are disappearing rapidly. I don’t think people know about the incredible power that these big companies have in controlling their entire industry. This fact seems to be essential in understanding food sustainability and our future food. These companies have the power to make decisions that will slow and even reverse the damage that has been done to our environment. Sustainable practices would be a lot more widespread if these big companies used them. However, profitability over sustainability seems to be the only ultimate goal for many of these companies.
