#2 – Nate (April 9th)

It’s April 9th, and we’re recording our third podcast (the last of the Animation podcasts) at some point tomorrow. We’ve watched a movie every day of the week, and I feel like our conversations about them have been good. Neither Kamara nor I are used to really talking about films and their inner-workings, though. We never really review things, just talk about what we like and why we like it (in our daily conversations). In the podcast, we’re trying to review and be more objective and straight forward. I don’t think we’re necessarily doing that (so far), but we’re still learning and I’m sure our conversations will get better as we record more episodes. I’ve been reading a lot of film criticism by Pauline Kael and Roger Ebert recently to get an understanding of how they talk about films, and how they get to the “why” instead of the “what”. I’m gonna’ try and talk more like them in the episode we record tomorrow. That being said, I still want the podcasts to be fun to listen to, and I think we’re achieving that. I listen to them and laugh (and they’re not too long which is great!)

On a different note, we’ve been working well together. Kamara’s been editing the podcasts this week, and I’ve been giving him feedback and then he re-edits, but I’ve tried not to critique every little thing. I don’t want Kamara to turn out 15 drafts of a 25-minute podcast because I feel like the background music is slightly overpowering. I’ll be editing next week, and I assume Kamara will act the same way that I’m acting now.

I’m looking forward to getting out of Animation Week and into Horror, Crime, and everything else (although I’m very excited to watch Akira tomorrow.) I feel like we’re doing a good job of picking films from across the globe, or at least films that have a global connection. This week, we watched an Israeli film, a german film, a french film (about west African people), and two Japanese films. Next week, I think we’ll have some more french, American, Korean, and British. It should be fun.
