Name: Zoe Karp
Social Justice Group: Menstrual Health
Date of Fieldwork: January 16, 2018
Name of Organization: Period Piece
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Liliana Tandon – Creator of Period Piece
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We had an interview with Liliana Tandon, who is the creator of Period Piece. Period Piece is an organization that makes videos about people on their periods during different periods of time.
What I learned:
We didn’t learn to much about this topic, because we focused mainly on her career. She won Best Original Comedy Web Series for her videos about periods, which I thought is really cool because not many people have the opportunities to win awards about periods. One thing that I thought was really interesting was that even though she is so important in this field, she had never really thought about the language we should be using. In our group, we talk about how we shouldn’t be saying “feminine hygiene products,” but she had never thought about that.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that one of the most important and useful ways to talk about uncomfortable subjects, like periods, is through comedy. Liliana Tandon has had incredible success through her funny videos about periods. She said that comedy can make people relax and not think about what’s uncomfortable. She also said that in schools, we should be integrating girls and boys to talk about periods, because that way we can try to break the stigma from a younger age.
