Interviewing Ingrid Nilsen

Name: Olivia Bagan

Social Justice Group: Menstrual Health

Date of Fieldwork: November 21, 2017

Name of Organization: N/A

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Ingrid Nilsen

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We meet with Ingrid in the learning lab and we asked her questions about how she got into menstruation activism and how she uses her YouTube channel to spread awareness about this topic.

What I learned:

During this interview I learned that people find it strange to bring menstrual products to a drive for homeless people. I also learned that many people that subscribe to Ingrid on YouTube feel uncomfortable watching the videos she posts about this topic. Lastly, I learned that in a certain language, taboo translates to menstruation which is kind of ironic…

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that when you have many followers on a social media platform, like YouTube, you should use it to spread awareness. I also learned that in order to succeed, you have to believe in yourself and not let other people’s opinions drag you down or discourage you.

Olivia

My name is Olivia. The topic I am focused on is menstrual equity. I am interested in this topic because it is not recognized as a social justice or human rights issue. I think this topic is important today because my generation is the one that is acknowledging menstruation as a social justice issue and the more people that talk and educate others about it, the more awareness this topic receives.
