Name: Emma Hirsch
Social Justice Group: Human Trafficking
Date of Fieldwork: November 27, 2017
Name of Organization: SafeHorizion
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Noelle Freis manager of training and community outreach at our Anti-Trafficking Program
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We learned a lot more about the basics of Sex trafficking considering we hadn’t really known much about it before. Going into this we barley even knew what sex trafficking really was. She made everything really clear and we now understand. We talked more about labor trafficking too, more than we thought we would because Noelle focused on all types of trafficking. This fieldwork was important because she helped us understand and really get a good start on our project.
What I learned:
I learned a lot of the basic stuff. I wan’t to learn more about races and how different raced are treated differently and how the color of your skin effects how men treat you. I want to talk about empowerment groups during our teach ins because this is something Noelle did a lot of and talked about them and I got really interested in that. In her empowerment groups, the survivors were asked to talk, but also had the option of just listening.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that a lot about safehomes and what they were. A safehome is a home that survivors can live in for about a year. They make it feel like a real home and all the people that live there say they are like a family. They do this because some survivors need a family/ never had one.
