Name: Eli Harris
Social Justice Group: Gun Control
Date of Fieldwork: December 8, 2017
Name of Organization: Eric Proshansky
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Eric Proshansky
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
My group mates and I traveled downtown to interview Eric Proshansky is the Deputy Chief of the Affirmative Litigation Division. That means he handles all of the law suits where the city sues someone rather than someone suing the city. The division has sued gun manufacturers, and gun dealers.
What I learned:
I learned so much by interviewing Eric Proshansky. His job is to help the city sue the manufacturers and dealers that are making the guns and dealing them in the first place. He helps attack the gun violence problem at a whole rather then helping convict individual people. I learned about background checks and how they work to make our world safer.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that there are many ways to do social justice work on the law side of things when it comes to gun violence. We had recently interviewed my father who is a criminal defense attorney. I didn’t know all the other types of lawyers who work on this topic day in and day out. It made me realize how big of a project and problem this really is.
