Sitting In On A Social Justice Class With Third Graders

Name: Olivia Propp

Social Justice Group: Race and Education

Date of Fieldwork: December 15, 2017

Name of Organization: (At LREI)

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Jessie’s Third Grade

Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action

What I did:

On Friday, our group went to Jessie’s third grade to sit in on a social justice class taught by Chap. Chap talked about x’s and o’s, and how o’s meant less and x’s meant more of. For example: More people have brown hair than red hair, so the red head people would be an o because there are less of that group. She gave us many examples of this about race and how there are more common things and less common things.

What I learned:

This helped us learn a little more about how in a school there could be less of a specific race or ethnicity in a class/grade and how they would be an O. And all the x’ s would be people of the same race. We also got to listen to the prospective of a third grader and their thoughts on this and how they understood this concept.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that there are a lot of places where there are fewer people of a certain race, and they can be called as an O like how Chap described it. We learned the concept of how there can be more of one thing than another and how people think about it.
