Hudson Taylor: An Athlete And an Ally

Name: Harvey Van Blerkom

Social Justice Group: Sports and Equality

Date of Fieldwork: December 5, 2017

Name of Organization: Athlete Ally

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Hudson Taylor, Founder/Executive Director of Athlete Ally

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We interviewed Hudson Taylor, the Founder of Athlete Ally. We spoke about his role as an ally, and how he helps others be allies.

What I learned:

I learned that Hudson goes to over 20 colleges per year, and he educates everyone on Athlete Ally. I also learned that every NBA rookie has a conversation with Hudson before entering the NBA.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Through the fieldwork, I learned that there are a lot of different ways to be activists for LGBT members in sports. I learned that you can be an activist as an ally by changing things that are wrong in the school. If someone who belongs to the LGBTQ community and is bullied in the locker room, you should stand up for them.
