On Tuesday, February 22 my group and I went to NYCLU, for a Know Your Rights Workshop. We traveled there by the 1 train and arrived at 4:20. This was the first fieldwork I’ve been on that was meant for teens. This Workshop was to teach kids what they can or cannot do when stopped by the police. We sat and listened for two hours about all the wonderful things that Michael was teaching us. Something that was very interesting was in the beginning of the workshop Michael had said statements and we had to go aside saying if we disagreed or agreed. The questions and statements were about people views on the police. This was interesting seeing different people’s views on the police. I learned that the things that you can do when stopped by the police won’t always work because the police often don’t abide the rules especially if its colored person being stopped. I thought that it was very interesting hearing people encounters by the police. I learned if you are ever stopped by the police do what they say and resist. I learned that try to remove anything type of clothing from you face because you might pose as a threat. Overall I learned a lot from this workshop even thought it was a long and boring workshop.
