My group and I had scheduled a fieldwork visit with this organization that fed the homeless. After a couple of calls and voicemails we were told to go to Bartholomew’s church on 51st street. As we walked in, we were told to put on aprons, gloves and hair nets. Me and my group started putting plates together, including beef, pasta, vegetables and chicken. We started handing out food and I realized that the people were so thankful.
When I was there I felt like what I was doing was very rewarding. Before anyone walked into the kitchen, me and my group asked a couple of questions to the volunteer coordinator. He was very descriptive and very helpful. I learned many things that I didn’t before walking in. That made me realize that going there not only made you feel very good and was very rewarding, but it’d finely taught me some things.
Me and my group were very eager to start handing out food and helping everyone that needed help. After a couple of plates and sandwiches had been handed out me and my partner at the bowl station, started talking to the people there and had fun with it. This made me realize that usually the people who have the least have the most interesting things to share. There were many different types of people and it made me realize that there doesn’t have to be a specific kind of people on need, I say people in need because most of them were just hungry and not homeless. After we finished out two hours there, we all felt like we should go back and do it again because we felt very good after finishing.
