Kids’ Project Puppet Theatre

Dear Families,

The talented educator-puppeteers from Kids’ Project were in school this week to teach children very creatively and concretely about inclusivity.  They brought with them puppets and dolls, along with other props, to teach out students what it is like to live with various disabilities.  They taught us some sign language, they performed some skits, and they answered our questions.  Our guests were Cecilia Arana and Mindy Pfeffer and they bring their wonderful message to schools at no charge courtesy of the New York State Office of Developmental Disabilities.  In K through fourth grade classrooms they taught about using a wheelchair, blindness, and down syndrome in a way that was both uplifting and interactive.

Cecilia and Mindy were impressed with LREI students who took the opportunity to share what they already knew about people with disabilities in their lives. In one class students shared a book that was written in Braille and told our guests about people at school and in their families with disabilities.

Cecilia and Mindy helped us explore how we feel when we see someone with a disability or when you hear someone speaking that has a disability. The children said they felt shy, scared, curious, and confused.  They taught us that children with disabilities can do the same things as children without, just in different ways.  With a special ball that beeps they showed us how children who can’t see play catch and baseball. The children closed their eyes, and as the presenter tossed it across and over the group, they pointed to the ball’s location, realizing that you can figure out where the ball is just by listening!

Here are just a few of our third and fourth graders’ reflections on the experience.  Ask you child what s/he remembers or learned!

“I learned that you shouldn’t be mean to people who have disabilities.  Blind people can play baseball.”

“Don’t talk louder to people who have blindness disability, just talk in normal voice.  The bumps on the subway are so blind people can locate where they have to stop.  They use a ball with a beeper to play baseball.”

“We learned sign language.  This means hello.  The puppeteers can talk like the people with Down Syndrome so you could hear what it sounded like.  They did different characters than they did last year.”

“I liked that the blind person could play baseball with a beeping ball.  They have Braille tags on their clothing so they know what it is.”

“I learned that people do not like to be called names.  I learned that everyone is different and everyone has something to work on.”

“When I read about Eric and how he was blind and climbed Mount Everest one of the life lessons is not to give up.  Another life lesson is if you work together you get more done and everything works better.”

“When I was watching the puppet show I could relate to how she [a child with down syndrome] felt.  I do not have a disability but my cousin does.”

“This puppet show made me happy too because it feels good just to talk about standing up to people who tease and/or are mean.  I think that the puppet show was important, and I’m glad we had it.”

Sincerely,
Namita
