Fall 2012: Afterschool has begun!!

Hello Families,

The Afterschool Program is in full swing, and we wanted to share some of the exciting activities that have been taking place this Fall, from new Enrichment classes and Instrumental Lessons, to Core activities and Choice Friday.

Cooking Day:Quesadillas

From Scratch

Come have a look at the stuffed animals that the kids from From Scratch are beginning to work on together!

Reds: Art Day

We explored how we can use our bodies to create various types of art.  Children were presented with the challenge of tracing their hand and creating something new from it.  The children made chickens, turkeys to “hand monsters,” and abstract designs.

Have a look!

Blues & Reds: Monkey Bread

See what the Blues and Reds cooked together this past Thursday, February 3rd.

Blues: Fall Art Project

Part of our goal for the Fall, on Blues Art Day, was to document the students’ work. Based on student interest, taking pictures led to creating a Stop Motion Animation project.

Ellie Balk, Afterschool Blues’ art teacher, presented the kids with various materials to work with. The pieces they made evolved into characters that each group then used in their Stop Motion Animation scene.

Blues teachers put the scenes together to create the following film. Enjoy!

Choice Friday: 1/28

Check out what we did on Friday!

Reds: Experiments/Explorations Day

In the interest of exploring the importance of bones in our own bodies we created a group challenge for the students. They were asked to form groups, and build a person together. The person had to stand on its own, and it had to be as
tall as possible. The materials they were given to use for this project were play-dough, rubber bands, and popsicle sticks.  Here are a few pictures of the experience and what we came up with together.

Choice Friday: Cooking Show

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U3Jiz-yldU

Every Friday at 4:30 Choice Friday begins in Afterschool. Three Afterschool teachers present their ideas for open-ended activities or projects.  Students then choose the idea that most appeals to them and help create the structure and content for the project they will do until they are picked up by their grownup.  On Fridays, the Reds (4’s-1st) and the Blues (2nd-6th) participate in choice time together creating an opportunity for younger and older kids to spend time with one another.

This is a video of a cooking show made during Choice Friday on October 15th.  Adrian Jevicki presented the idea and the kids who joined this project wrote the script, decided how the show would be presented, and agreed on what they would make.  This episode is hosted by chefs: Anna (3rd), Miles (2nd), Zariel (K), Gus (1st), Onaje (3rd), and Leela (4’sK).  The featured eaters: Drew (K), Graham (3rd), Louie (3rd), Bay (3rd), and Elias (3rd).  Enjoy!
