Critical Reflection #3: Now that you’re three weeks (half way) into your senior project experience, are you answering your essential question?
Essential Question: What is the relationship between concept and execution in fashion.
I think I have learned so much about my essential question through my work so far. One thing I have been fortunate about is I am able to factor my skill level into whatever I am making, thus I don’t feel like I have to be avant guard compared to other designers, but just compared to myself and the little I know about fashion. My essential question has not changed but I think the reason I’m answering it has. In the begging and planning stage I was thinking about this question from a sort of product design point of view. Relating it directly and exclusively to craftsmanship and I think execution could be much broader than that. Execution involves choice of material and fabric and thinking about how you’re going to construct the garment at hand. While craftsmanship, in my opinion, is about your sewing ability and the look and quality of the overall piece is based on your level. I would say my biggest challenges so far have been perseverance. It’s such a weird time and I think it has affected my work ethic a bit so consistently staying involved has been a bit of a challenge, though I’m quite happy with the work I have up to this point.
