Jane Olsen CR #5 – Metacognition

A large part of my project has been about exploring myself and my habits and how I can improve them to improve my wellness, so in theory I have been practicing metacognition throughout these six weeks. One of the things I have discovered about myself is that my processes and needs vary greatly and it is important to pay attention to these variations so I can best adjust my wellness habits. For example, maybe exercising early in the morning one day will make me feel energized and more productive for the rest of the weekend but another day sleeping in could provide me with the same benefits. It’s all about being in tune with one’s body, mind and how these two systems are connected.

In terms of what I know I don’t know – I recognize that I don’t know a lot. The wellness industry/field is a vast one and I have only hit the surface of what it has to offer, let alone the benefits that I can reap from various practices and ultimately different ways of life. My project is basically in search of the best lifestyle I can live to maximize my wellness at a given moment. This is something you can’t ever achieve or know everything about because one’s life is constantly changing, and the ‘best’ lifestyle or perspective is ever changing. Despite this reality, there are components of healthy living that I know will stay consistently important throughout my life, such as the need for sleep, movement, and social connection.

I was able to succeed in learning about my topic while in quarantine, which has made me realize my learning style is very adaptable. However, I realize more and more everyday the vital need I have for social connection, interaction and support. It was helpful to take my online class about the psychology of wellness with my dad because we were able to have discussions in the way that I would with a peer in class. Nonetheless, after time away from friends, conversations with strangers and other social interaction I am ready to go back to reality and live the life I have now become so grateful for.
