Critical Reflection #1: What I Know vs What I Don’t Know (CR1)

I chose my essential question coincidentally around for the philosophy that Confucius and Socrates inquire about. Throughout the various forms of art making in my life I have realized that my strengths lie on the idea side of things and often my craftsmanship falters. To be put another way, the image in my head is often quite disparate from the final product of any given project. Thus my essential question is precisely what I know I don’t know about fashion, and even art in general. Wile fashion is, and I believe always will be a booming industry, Doll clothes is not as fortunate. While very popular in the victorian era, with mass production of clothes, many people stopped making their own clothes and in turn clothes for their dolls. One major experience of my research is realizing how little I really know about the construction side of fashion. Designers are able to create amazing garments with such interesting silhouettes and I’m not even sure out to do a pencil skirt. I think learning and diving deeper into construction is not only going to be a part of my project but also of any fashion exploration I choose to do in the future. I think my favorite thing about fashion is how it is a really interesting blend of concept and execution, (hence my essential question.) While I am not saying I have mastered the conceptual side of fashion, I’m far from it in fact, I think if I learned the real possibilities and limitations of constructing a garment, I would be able to conceptualize so much better. I think one of the only non-essential questions I have is, how far, in terms of construction skill will I be at the end of this project?
