Anna Mueller – Blog Post #6: Internal vs. External Conflict

In order to differentiate between Hanna’s character’s story and my character’s story, I think it’s crucial to closely examine the conflict that our characters will face. While it was mostly unplanned, Hanna decided that her character’s main conflict would relate to the virus and its effects on the character and her family. This is an external conflict. I thought the best way to get a strong contrast between the characters would be if my character’s conflict was very different from Hanna’s. So, I decided that my character will be dealing with the more of an internal conflict as she tried to assess whether or not the person she has become friends with is also the person who is sending her threats in the mail. She must figure out if Hanna’s character is someone to be trusted, as she claims, or if she is secretly playing games with her. And if so, for what reason? And does she already know her? Is Astrid even a real person? This is an internal conflict. I’m quite sure that the variation in the type of conflict will only add to the character differences. It will also give a multi-faceted view on the stresses of the quarantine, highlighting the emotions that are direct results of it, and ones that are just impacted by it. Hanna and I will both face challenges writing about our respective conflicts but the intent is to add more depth to our overall piece.
