Writing a Screenplay #2

This week I have completely changed the plot of my story. Originally it was something like this:

Beginning: Two friends coming back from a party, each of them frustrated about where they are in their lives.

End: Taylor kills Eric after cheating with his girlfriend and dragging Taylor away from opportunity.

Plot Point 1: Taylor meets his girlfriend, and they start dating.

Plot Point 2: Tayor finds out that Eric has been cheating with her.

This was based on Syd Field’s guidelines to ensure the success of a screenplay and how best to structure one. However, as I wrote about the first 10 pages, I was stumped on how to continue. It felt difficult to push on, and I couldn’t make the character Eric relatable or human-feeling. So, not only did I scrape the idea of killing Eric, but I also removed the entire murder plot of the story. After talking to peers and reviewing the script, I felt that the best direction I could go was something much closer to home. Currently, I find my self writing about three students on their way to the final set of tests, the tests that will determine their final grades, and ultimately what college they will go to. I’m thinking that this will have a much easier pace and certainly much more content for me to draw from. However, who knows if this new idea will stick and make it to next week!
