CR2 – An Experience In Detail

The process of recording vocals for the track that I posted on the blog recently is something that I thought was CR-worthy, so here are my thoughts on that:

I never recorded vocals myself until fairly recently, about a couple months ago. I started recording them more frequently when quarantine started. Usually, I’m pretty confident about singing – I may not be confident in my abilities yet, but I trust myself to mix it into the track well enough to make it sound passable. However, recording vocals for my song with Dominic felt a little different.

This time, when recording I had the audience in mind the whole time – unlike my personal music, which I can keep to myself or release to the world without telling, this music has the potential to be heard by any member of my grade, so having that in the back of my mind might’ve subtly changed my approach to singing. All of a sudden, I was thinking about what other people might want to hear – in the end, I actually think the vocals came out more left-field then I usually make them (they aren’t that left-field anyways), and I think I was able to mitigate the changed circumstances to create a vocal that I’m reasonably proud of. Whether I’ll go back and recut them is up for debate (depending on how they age), but while recording, I was able to realize and attempt to remove outside influence from the recording equation, and it’s been nice to analyze and write about that here. Till next time,

Gus
