Nate and Kamara, who are in my cohort, are making a podcast where they watch and discuss movies. I’ve been listening to it, and I’ve found it very helpful. Their insights about movies are helping me to consider how I could reverse-engineer a film. For example, in one podcast, Nate talked about a “ticking” score adding a sense of urgency to a film. Now I know that if I want to tell the audience something is at stake, or something intense is or will happen, or just to be nervous, I can employ a tense soundtrack or the sound of a clock. This is helpful because I want to employ the mantra “show, don’t tell” instead of relying on clumsy exposition from the characters to get the story where I want it to be.
