This week I started watching movies related to my project. I developed a tactic before trying this, which is to take notes while watching the movie, scribbling down points and similarities and things that interest me, then taking time to go through those notes. I organize what I’ve written into three subcategories: characters, plot, and style. The borders between these are very tenuous, especially as I have a very limited knowledge of film. Then, after all that, I write down my takeaways, things that go towards answering my essential question. I take what stood out to me, consider why, and write down what I think it all means. This has helped me develop a general outline for the incidents of the film I want to write. The story is very generally about people who do bad things for a variety of reasons. I want the audience to have to ask the question, over and over again, of whether what the people do was justified, and to not come up with a solid answer. The extenuating circumstance in this case is a home invasion. This gives me clear villains and clear victims, roles I want to muddle by giving all the characters backstories that cloud their position.
