Ian Reyes Reverse Engineering Week 2 Post 2

I’ve been spending a good amount of time recently focusing more of on the computer-aided design (CAD) aspect of reverse engineering. Since I managed to take apart the hairdryer, I decided to begin designing some of the parts I found inside. I’ve been using onshape to make the case of the hairdryer, although because it is such a round shape, I have been having a lot of difficulty designing it. I looked up several videos on it and was finally able to find a method that would help me get the design I want, but it is still far from perfect. I managed to make the front and back cover look decent and I am really proud of the way they turned out.

However, the handles are not turning out so great because I can’t figure out how to completely get rid of the front of the handles where all the buttons and wires would go. I also can’t seem to figure out how to make the handles more round-looking.

Overall however, I think it’s gonna turn out alright.

  1. Ian, I think the design in CAD is a really interesting way to come to understand something about the form and function of the device you are exploring. It might be fun to think about how you might redesign the hairdryer (at least in terms of form) using the CAD program. Maybe try to create a novel design (e.g., what might a hairdryer for an astronaut on the space station look like?).
