Experimenting with the Process and Style

After I spent a couple of days doing some research and finding some inspiration by looking at other artists, I decided to start drawing and sketching. I did not have a plan at all and just allowed myself to experiment stylistically and with my materials.

I started by setting up the maquette that I wanted to use. Though I photograph it for the sake of documenting the process, I look at the set up from life when I draw, rather than looking at a photograph. I use a pencil to sketch it and outline the lines with a Micron pen with one consistent line weight. I then scan it and digitally color it using photoshop.

With this experimentation, I got a sense of what I do know and don’t know about photoshop, how long one scene takes me, and what I do like about this style that I am working in.

  1. I think you really brought this photograph to life in your drawings. In the photograph it’s just a bunk bed to me but the picture makes me feel like I’m watching Arthur or one of the other shows I watched growing up. I said Arthur because the animation has a very specific look to it that I can definitely recognize in this drawing.
