Reverse Engineering Day 2

Today was a lot more productive than yesterday. I started out by attempting to open up the PS4 once more, but again, to no avail. After that, I decided to try going for something smaller. I have a broken PSP at home that I hadn’t touched in years, so I decided to give it a shot. At first I tried doing it with no videos just to see if I could, but I didn’t get far at all. I unscrewed a few things, but I didn’t know where to go from there, so I finally decided to look it up. I found various videos online, but once again, I needed to find the right make/model in order to accurately take mine apart. I finally found a video that had the right model and I started to watch it. It looked extremely complicated to take apart, but since the PSP was broken anyway, I figured I wouldn’t be doing anymore damage to it if I gave it a shot. I was able to unscrew a few more things and finally got the screen off. From there everything became much more complicated because of how sensitive each component was. Before even going beneath the LCD screen, there was a ribbon cable just below it that I had to take off in such a specific way. I was able to get it after a couple tries. I then had to remove the LCD screen, which looked much simpler in the video since the guy literally just lifted it off. Mine did not come out as easily so I had to take a prying tool to pry out the sides, which is what was giving me most trouble. I finally got it off and was met with a variety of ribbon cables along with several circuit boards and various other components. After I was done taking apart as much as I could without getting rid of any adhesives, I put it back together, which was more challenging than I expected since the video didn’t show me how to do that. Overall however, I’m very happy with the fact that I was able to take it apart to begin with.

  1. Ian, I like that after two attempts you pivoted to another project and were successful. I wonder if anything PSP experiment can translate to the PS4 problem. On a much less significant note, when you add images add them as full size, which I did for you this time. Since there isn’t really any limitation on space, seeing the larger images is helpful.
