Reverse Engineering Day 1

A had watched various videos before of people taking apart Playstations, and they were always done with such ease, that I figured it couldn’t possibly be as hard to do. However, when I gave it a shot on my own PS4 and took off the top for the very first time, I realized just how sensitive and complex this system really was. There were several screws and circuits and pieces that I was too afraid to touch because I felt that if I did, I would somehow break the system altogether. I didn’t want to mess anything up, so I started researching online the best ways to take apart the PS4. As I researched these videos, I noticed just how different the devices I saw online were from my own. I hadn’t realized prior to taking apart my PS4 that the model was different from most of the ones I found online. I then had to figure out what model my PS4 was so I could then find out the best way to take it apart that wouldn’t lead to me breaking it. I watched several videos showing me how to do it, but I finally stuck to one that looked the simplest. The guy in the video showed me exactly what screws to remove and which areas I should avoid tampering with so that it wouldn’t cause any damage to the system. I did as he said, but when it got to the part where I had to take off another part from the top, I had too much trouble. In the video he said I simply had to lift it from the front starting from the right and moving left. I did exactly as he said/did, but when I got to the left corner, it wouldn’t budge. I kept pulling it toward me from various angles so I could pull it out, but it just wouldn’t work. I even tried loosening it from the back to see if it would help, but because of its slanted design, it only made it more difficult. I finally gave up on working it from that angle, and looked up other videos to see if there was any other way I could take it out. I found a video of someone taking apart that same model, but starting from the bottom. When I attempted to do the same exact steps he did, my PS4 once again would not budge. I figured that the reason I couldn’t get it off from the top or from the bottom was perhaps because my PS4 has some type of adhesive keeping the top and bottom in place that the ones from YouTube did not. Regardless of the reason, I screwed everything back in and put all the pieces back where they went so I could attempt it again tomorrow.

  1. Ian, I appreciate the perseverance here and also the conjecturing about what might be making it hard to remove that one piece. I’m also struck by the fact that one of the challenges that you’ll likely encounter throughout this project is one of working at a small scale where tiny missteps can have significant impacts. It will be interesting to keep track of your own sense of the skills you are developing to work in this way.
