Name: Farin Weinger
Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Sexualization of Women in Fashion
Date of Fieldwork: February 25, 2019
Name of Organization: Ashley Graham
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Ashley Graham, Supermodel
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We interviewed supermodel, Ashley Graham.
What I learned:
I learned that anyone could be a model. Ms. Graham was asked at a mall and become this superb model now. She has a belief and through that she shaped her carrier. Now she has a book, podcast, hosted the Oscars, multiple fashion lines, and is on the cover of the 2016 Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. I also learned about the tokenism in the fashion industry and what she is doing to help change that by showing how she, a not “straight-size” model, can be as beautiful as she is by loving herself. Cellulite and all.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that the most important thing someone can do is be able to tell their story. Ms. Graham said that her favorite thing about her job is the fact that she is able to tell her story, so other may tell theirs. When you are in a position of power it is amazing to be able to handle it with grace and better others in the process. She said all of her fans were like her siblings, and by doing that she is bringing everyone together.
