Interview with Ashley Graham!

Name: Polly Gilmore

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Sexualization of Women in Fashion

Date of Fieldwork: February 25, 2019

Name of Organization: N/A

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Ashley Graham, Supermodel

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We had a Skype Interview with Ashley Graham!

What I learned:

We learned how modeling affects people lives, and what being a “plus-size” model is like. We learned how Ms. Graham wants to help curvy women tell their stories, and how she hopes that by seeing hers, they’ll be inspired. We also learned how it is good to build a businesswoman image, which Ms. Graham certainly has through her podcast, clothing and swimsuit lines and book. Ms. Graham also said how her podcast has given her a wonderful platform to talk to other women who are pioneers in their fields.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

We learned that it’s hard but very rewarding to be the “first” of something. Ms. Graham said that she was grateful and honored to be the first “plus-size” model to do many things, but that she is also not the FIRST “plus-size” woman. She is doing something that should have been done a long time ago.
