Interview with Ray Hogan

Name: Drew

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Sports, Activism & Race

Date of Fieldwork: November 20, 2018

Name of Organization: Springhill Entertainment

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Ray Hogan

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We talked about LeBron’s school and Shut Up and Dribble, which Mr. Hogan helped produce. Our questions were based on what LeBron’s mission is and our topic, Sports, Race, and Equality.

What I learned:

I learned that when you have big stars in a sport speak out on a topic that isn’t sports, it changes the mind of people. LeBron’s show went straight towards that message that people would start paying attention to this issue if these stars spoke out. LeBron comes from a poor community and he speaks for the people who can’t.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

During our interview, I learned that the people who have big contracts or big amounts of money need to speak up and use their platform properly. LeBron has a quote where he says “You should be more than an athlete.” and Shut Up and Dribble and the Kaepernick protest speaks right to that statement. LeBron James is contributing so much to his hometown of Akron, Ohio with his school. His school doesn’t just help children, it also helps grown-ups get their diplomas.

Drew

Drew is an eighth grade student at LREI. He likes to play soccer and watch football and basketball. Drew is dedicated to issues of race, equality and activism in sports because he is inspired by Colin Kaepernick's and LeBron James' stand to the president and to justice.
