Interview with Reporter Ben Chapman

Name: Lucia

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Homelessness & Education

Date of Fieldwork: November 15, 2018

Name of Organization: Daily News

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Ben Chapman education reporter

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

For this fieldwork, we went to the Daily News building and interviewed Ben Chapman, an education reporter. We asked him about his work and what he has learned and experienced.

What I learned:

I learned that 1 in 10 students in the public school system experience housing instability. This is a very large number compared to the number of current students. I also learned that students have lived by themselves in shelters before.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Through the fieldwork, I learned that if you want to fix something, you need to hear people’s stories. You can learn so much from hearing people’s experiences. They can teach you lessons and inform you. This can help other people by creating solutions based on stories.

Lucia

Lucia is an 8th grader at LREI. She chose education and poverty as her social justice project because she strongly believes that any kid, no matter the social class, should have access to education.
