Social Justice Group: Access to Sports for Kids

Date of Fieldwork: November 26, 2018

Name of Organization: Steady Buckets

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles:

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We went to one of their practices and talked about and learned about Steady Buckets. We also had a follow up meeting with him after at LREI.

What I learned:

We learned about the public school program and that some schools don’t have a gym or sports teams so they Come to Steady buckets to play and that is their physical education for the week. We learned that kids come to Steady Buckets and make friends for life and they become a family. This is very important because some kids may not have the best family at home so for them to come to Steady Buckets and make one is amazing.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Throughout the fieldwork I realized there were so many kids don’t have as many chances to play sports as we do and we need to make a change. We need to help kids have more chances to play. I would love to make a tournament for kids who can’t be on an AAU team to play. We learned that the paid for sessions are mostly white and the non paying sessions is much more diverse.
