Name: Kaya Karati
Social Justice Group: Maternal/Fetal Care
Date of Fieldwork: November 28, 2017
Name of Organization: Choices in Childbirth
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Nan Strauss
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
So for our second fieldwork we went to the EMC offices to meet with Ms. Strauss. She used to work at CIC and then when it started to go under she transferred.
What I learned:
I learned how hard it is for mothers to speak up during labor. She told us about how many people don’t know the difference between doulas and midwives. The difference is that doulas do nothing really medical or physical they do more verbal and breathing exercises and encourage mothers to speak up.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned how much Nan Strauss has made an impact on human rights. Nan was a lawyer before she realized that there was a lot of change that needed to be done first. She talked about availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality (AAAQ). This was really important because it’s a problem when it shouldn’t be and its really cool that Nan is helping it.
