Interviewing Sam from NYCore

Name: Olivia Propp

Social Justice Group: Race and Education

Date of Fieldwork: February 21, 2018

Name of Organization: NYCore

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Sam Coleman

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We had an interview with Sam Coleman who works with NYCore.

What I learned:

We learned that in several schools there is a lot of overcrowding in classrooms and kids do not get a lot of recess in public schools. It’s hard for students to relax in such an overcrowded classroom and it makes it harder for the teachers to work with all the kids. Sam believes that school funding should be equitable, but right now it is not. One main source for school funding is raised by PTA (parent teacher association), and by raising this money kids get better materials and support they need to have a good education. But unfortunately not all families can raise enough money to support the schools.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that it is very important to be involved and to take action to help make a change. Raising awareness is also important so more people can know about these issues and try to help.
