Interview With Sam Coleman From NYCore

Name: Colette Leong

Social Justice Group: Race and Education

Date of Fieldwork: February 21, 2018

Name of Organization: NYCore

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Sam Coleman

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

Our group interviewed Sam Coleman from NYCore who helps parents and teachers get more involved with their children and student’s education.

What I learned:

I learned that one guiding principle for education is for students to be involved with social justice work inside and out of the classroom. I also learned that wealthy schools have big PTAs (Parent Teacher Associations) that use their money to pay for extra classes like PE and art. Schools in underserved communities don’t have as large and wealthy of a PTA, so extra classes aren’t provided.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that by gathering up, people can create more of a change and a bigger impact on society.

Colette

Hi, I'm Colette and I'm in the social justice group Educational Equity. I believe all students regardless of their financial situation and race should get a quality education. Students who are financially in need don't have equal rights to education as to students who are financially well off. In order for us to have an educated community, all students should receive a quality education now!
