Interview With Chap, the LREI Director of Diversity

Name: Olivia Propp

Social Justice Group: Race and Education

Date of Fieldwork: December 11, 2017

Name of Organization: LREI Interview

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Sandra Chapman

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We had an interview with Chap the LREI director of diversity. We asked her many questions about her job and what she does to help the school about diversity. She also drew examples on the board to answer some of the questions that were more complicated to describe in words.

What I learned:

We learned that our school has always been diverse, but not all schools are like this. As the tuition goes up, it changes racial ethnic diversity of schools. Since our school tries out new ways of doing things sometimes the tuition has to go up, which makes it harder for some families. We also learned more about our school and how progressive education isn’t all about learning facts and being perfect, but there can be all different aspects. For example: One kid could be good at asking questions, but may not be good at answering the questions. Chap connects with parents, students, faculty, staff, administrators, board members, alum, people and organizations outside of LREI to help more LREI’s diversity statement forward.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that having an interview with someone can give us lots of information because the person we interview is more of an expert as we are about our topic so we get to learn so much more. One of the most important parts are making the questions, because the questions are one of the main parts of the interview.
