Sheila Berman Interview

For our first field work, we facetimed a woman named Sheila Berman. She lives in D.C. and she’s an attorney. Sheila works on international human trafficking issues in our society. Her work is funded by the state police department. She works with prosecutors, trains police officers, and judges. She works for the department of justice too. Sheila mostly works on human trafficking issues but we also talked about our topic- sex trafficking. Sheila gave us a few examples of sex trafficking. Some cases are women that live in Mexico with not very good jobs or no jobs at all and they get tricked into coming to the United States. They come to the United States thinking there are jobs and or given jobs as prostitutes. Some of these terrible human trafficking cases also take place in Asia, Europe, Africa and the South Pacific. Most of the victims of any kind of trafficking but especially sex trafficking don’t and won’t talk about their experiences, so Sheila said it may be hard to find many field works on our topic. But she did recommend GEMS: Girls Educational & Mentoring Services.
