Digital Citizenship
At LREI, we talk a lot about what it means to be a good community member. In your humanities classes, you explore the nature of citizenship across cultures and across time. So what does it mean in our time to be a good “digital” citizen? Are there aspects of digital citizenship that are especially important for sixth graders?
A google search for “digital citizenship” will yield lots of information. How do we decide what is really important?
What are your thoughts? In the comment space below, offer your ideas about what you think the essential elements of digital citizenship are and/or comment on the ideas of others. If you reply to a comment, make sure that you are pushing the conversation ahead either deeper or into new areas.

After taking a look through the nine digital citizenship elements, I think that number eight struck me the most… here is what it said…
8. Digital Health & Wellness: physical and psychological well-being in a digital technology world.
Eye safety, repetitive stress syndrome, and sound ergonomic practices are issues that need to be addressed in a new technological world. Beyond the physical issues are those of the psychological issues that are becoming more prevalent such as Internet addiction. Users need to be taught that there are inherent dangers of technology. Digital Citizenship includes a culture where technology users are taught how to protect themselves through education and training.
This struck me because when I usually think of digital citizenship I think about how you use the computer and what you do on it, but now there is a whole new way of looking at it. Now I realize how important number eight is because when I am on my phone I usually spend way too long and my eyes start to hurt. Another example is how if you use electronics before bed you usually have trouble falling asleep.

I think that digital citizenship is very important. When I found out that that it was on the bill of rights, I was really surprised. If digital citizenship is on the bill of rights you have to follow it. It should go with out saying. If you are interested read the paragraph below.
Digital Rights & Responsibilities: those freedoms extended to everyone in a digital world.
Just as in the American Constitution where there is a Bill of Rights, there is a basic set of rights extended to every digital citizen. Digital citizens have the right to privacy, free speech, etc. Basic digital rights must be addressed, discussed, and understood in the digital world. With these rights also come responsibilities as well. Users must help define how the technology is to be used in an appropriate manner. In a digital society these two areas must work together for everyone to be productive. Digital Rights & Responsibilities: those freedoms extended to everyone in a digital world.

I think that digital citizen ship is basically your manners and the do’s and don’ts of the internet. For example do’s are doing you home work, watching t.v., watching a funny video. The don’ts are inappropriate sites, inappropriate videos etc.
I agree with Juliet because people often don’t really know what being a good digital citizen is. People shouldn’t do the “don’ts”, but the people who choose the wrong thing often have consequences. Being a good digital citizen means dong the right thing and not trailing off to something you’re not supposed to do on the internet.
Good digital citizen means doing the right thing on the internet or online, and bad digital citizen is the exact opposite. I agree with Juliet and Annabelle “don’ts” are really super bad because if one day you have a kid, and that kid decides to look there parent up on the internet and sees something inappropriate under your name your kid could be scared or worried. And thats an example of a consequence for bad digital citizenship.
I feel like digital citezenship is more than that, I mean even if you followed the do’s, you could do something horribly wrong. Like let’s say you went on a funny video, but then commented “OMG LOL YOU LOOK LIKE A POTATO!! LOLOLOLOLOL” I mean that would totally be a don’t, that would be really mean. Sure going on weird sites is wrong, but being a cyber bully is worse.
I agree with juliet too because people do not always know what being a good digital citizen means and some people are bad digital citizens when they put stuff on that internet that is not good or inappropriate.
I agree. It’s not your fault if you find something that your not supposed to see. It’s legal for people to post almost whatever they want on the Internet. It’s important to be carful about what your searching.
I agree I think everyone should be a good digital citizen no matter what. Also cyber bullying can hurt much more because it means that that person really thought about that so it would really hurt someones feelings.
I think that is just how some people are, you just have to try to ignore it. But like jack said if your on it on accident it’s not your fault.
I agree with Ruthanne because not everyone in every school learns about digital citizenship or cyberbullying. It is good to know about it because you know what to look out for.
I agree with Annabelle. To be a good citizen you have to do the right thing all the time and you have to do the right things as much as you can. I think a lot of people don’t do that and they should do it if there on the Internet
I agree the media has has many inaporpriate sites that a kid could accedently see and read. Parens/teachers/groundups need to tell kids what is not apporperate for there age.
I agree with Alexa and everyone here. Cyber bullying is really bad too and people don’t think about it and they think it’s ok because there is no one to stop them. They think it’s ok to do, but it can make a big impact on people. You should think about what you are doing and the consequences.
I agree with Juliet. It is important to know the dos and Don’ts. You should know a do from a don’t and you should follow the rules. You shouldn’t abuse you connection to the internet.
I agree with all of you pretty much about how you act on the internet. But I would say there’s also an act of sense on how you use it, for example, hacking a website, not hacking someone specifically is another type of digital citizenship. You have also to respect websites, not only people. The whole idea of the internet is a place to put your creations, your ideas, and by for example hacking someones creations, it is harming other citizens.

I agree with Juliet I think that technology is used for Homework and for responsible stuff. Sure you can play games watch tv and more but you shouldn’t do inappropriate sites because it can harm you. I also think that people shouldn’t do don’ts because the people that do those don’ts can get in trouble in many different ways if they get caught.

I think it is what not to watch and do for example hacking, bullying and inappropriate videos. It is also being careful of what you do like don’t click on link in comment sections in youtube or listen to people you don’t know.
Adding on to Ryan, I thing that any inappropriate use on the internet towards any one person can be bullying because when you think it might be a joke to some people it might feel like the world hates them. Like in the game you did not really know who was sending you the mean texts and you and they were from many different numbers.
I agree with Ryan and Yannik because the excuse that people have with cyber bullying is probably the same as with regular bullying. With other kinds of bullying too the reasoning is “It was just a joke” same as cyber bullying. I joke can be interpreted different ways and just because you thought it was a joke, it doesn’t mean that everyone else will.
I agree with Rei, it is not a joke if you are cyber bullying someone. I the other person knows you are joking then it is fine. But if you send to a lot of people without the other persons permission that is bad.
I agree with Yannik because, any thing mean posted on the internet is rude. Not just using inappropriate language, but also threats, and comments on how the person looks or acts can be very rude. If someone gets cyberbullied they are being bullied by someone with bad digital citezenship. It is important to have digital citezenship because you can hurt people very easily by having bad citezenship
I think that people think that if you put “hate comments” on social media for reasons that aren’t that they dislike your post, but it is more of an act of jealousy, unsatisfied anger, or that the hate work make them a hateful person. This is where the anonymous factor comes in. Just because someone doesn’t know who you are, doesn’t mean you don’t know what are/ what you did. Every hater thinks they are ontop of the world, when someone responds to their hate, then the hurtful words come in.
I agree hate comments are the worst I think that they are aimed to make someone feel bad about themselves. The people who post them are basically bullys.
I agree with Ryan. Digital citizenship is to no bully people, search bad things, be nice and be responsible. Also don’t do what they do in mean girls. Like be nice and don’t sent bad pictures and don’t make books about people in your school then blame it on other people.
Digital citizenship is being a good online community member, for example if someone needs help on a multi player game don’t call them a noob help them. I think the game also helped show this and was a great example of bad digital citizenship.
I think that having good digital etiquette is the most important because if someone is beeing mean on the internet the worst thing is to back them up. You should have good etiquette and tell them that what they said was mean.
We keep each other accountable about what happens on the internet, and text, and email.
I agree with Charlie because if you just be mean back to them, then you are making the problem worse.
IF someone is posting something mean or hacking you in a mean way, you have to pause, take a step back, and think about why. Was it something you did. Is it something they are going through. You have to remember that you have to become the enemy to kill the enemy. The game was not realistic at all, because someone would not just make a website and put a pic on it, because domains cost money. For example at GODADDY.com, a domain cost 2.99 for fist year, and 14.99 additional. Why would they use like real cash? What would most likely happen would be that one guy post it on Instagram or Facebook or twitter. The it is free.
If u want to be a good digital citizen, u cannot judge other people, because they have different opinions. There are somethings on the inter-webs that you should and can critique, and then there are peoples opinions. If someone says that someone is a loser, you can not oppose them because you do not have any evidence even if they are your friend. That person has to deal with that negative comment themselves. In life nothing will ever go perfectly your way, because someone will always oppose you so if you make people believe that your digital life is the real you, the most likely you are going to fail in life, and be a torn person because u life wreched cus o’ some ol’ comment.
Super Bowl Commercial Coke. I know that this is an add but it had everything to do with this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVQKzy3j9-U
If people make a hateful post, video, email, etc. if makes it worse if you act like they hurt you, also to back them up if you are scared they will target you first.
I think that digital citizenship is a good thing for people to follow and use. If it helps teachers and students monitor what goes on, on the internet, then it should help.
I agree with Keira. If we didn’t have digital citizenship, then things could not turn out very well and people could say mean things about each other. It is very helpful to have parents, teachers, and grown-ups there because they sometimes know how to fix it.
I agree with Keira as well. If you are being a good citizenship person online all the time, you are following the rules and things are okay for everyone but if you are cyber bullying someone or looking up inappropriate things you are not following the rules and have BAD digital citizenship.
Have GOOD digital citizenship!!!!! 🙂
I think that it is really mean to cyber bully people because it’s almost worse than bullying because you can’t see what is happening, and you can’t really stand up for your self and there can’t be anyone there to be an ally and say that bullying is wrong. I think that it is wrong to bully and a lot of the time, you don’t even know why you have been targeted. I think that bullying doesn’t really make sense and I don’t think that anyone should do it.
I think being a good digital citizenship means being appropriate online. I think this connects to cyber bullying. I think if you are not being a good digital citizenship you might be cyber bullying.
Cyber Bullying sucks. No one should be in a situation in which you can’t see the person bullying you.
Lot’s of times, you don’t even know why you’re being targeted.
Being a “good digital citizen” means, that you are mature, trustworthy etc on the internet. For sixth graders it’s really important that you look up something that is “appropriate” for your age. So maybe you would look up a TV show. Austin and Ally, Jessie, Good luck charlie, spongeBob Square pants. The power rangers, the Flintstones. I know that those might be a little too babyish, but you don’t really want to watch other things, that aren’t your age. You don’t want to watch the Blacklist, etc.
I think to be a good digital citizen you need to follow the rules and guidelines that you know are set for you without being told.
I think that the internet is a tool used to be helpful or enjoyable, not life ruining or dangerous.
