Accident on the Intrepid
One day most of the boys from a school called LREI in fourth grade were going to a one day sleepover in the Intrepid museum. It wasn’t like a tour around the museum, well maybe it was supposed to be. But we were also allowed to run around and play a lot of games. There is a kid named Zach who is ten who was very excited for this trip.
One of his friends was going, too. His name was Finn. He lived close to Zach, in the same neighborhood ( Tribeca ) but not on the same street. So basically Zach lives on Leonard st. in Tribeca close to his friend Finn. They were so excited to go on the trip. Every kid had to go with their dad as well. There was someone else Zach was excited to see. His name was Liam. Zach was excited to see him because he left at the end of third grade to move to Connecticut. He was one of Zach’s very close friends.
Zach and his Dad hailed down a taxi to go to the Intrepid. Zach wondered how many people were already there. He could not wait to get there and constantly asked his Dad, “Are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet?” Finally we got there and got on the Intrepid. He saw that most of his friends were already there, by that I mean half of the friends. Zach went onto the deck where most people were.
Then one of Zach’s friends had an idea to play tag around the Intrepid. We decided that Cyrus, one of Zach’s friends, should be it. He counted to 10 and then went after all of us. Zach and his friends Beckett, Finn, Liam, and Jett went into an elevator that led down to the main floor.
Cyrus spotted Zach and his friends instantly and went after us. Then they got into the elevator and Jett started rapidly pressing the button to close the front elevator door. Finally it closed with Cyrus only being a couple feet away. They were all panting, besides Beckett, because he had a spot in the elevator where Cyrus could not see him. When Zach and his friends finally got down to the main floor we met up with Dennis who took the stairs down. Dennis was panting as well. He then quickly said, “Cyrus is coming!”
They all got the signal instantly and ran to a hiding place. There was a hiding spot they found where if he came through one side they could escape through another. But he didn’t come. They waited and waited. “ Where is he,” Jett whispered pretty loudly.
“Someone should check,” Dennis said. They decided that Jett should go check since he brought it up. He left our hiding spot and came back 10 seconds later. He said no one was there. They then heard a ding coming from the elevator that was a couple feet away. Everyone panicked besides Zach because the chances were that it’s 1 out of 1,000 that it would be Cyrus coming out. Well he made a big mistake. Walking out of the elevator was Cyrus.
He ran for cover next to the elevator. Surprisingly to his luck he went the opposite way. By then he realized that he should run, so he did. He found Jett and Dennis and asked where Finn went. They said he went to where there was a big model of the Intrepid. “That’s the direction Cyrus went!” He spat out quickly.
“Then we should tell Finn,” said Dennis. They ran in that direction. They were all nervous. Then Jett made us stop.
“That’s a terrible idea!” Jett said, “what if Cyrus see’s us!” They surprisingly took the risk that Cyrus would not see them. They found Finn and signaled him that Cyrus was coming. Finn ran towards them. They went back to the elevator to go down to the basement of the Intrepid. If I say it like that then there is about 5 basements. Since the Intrepid is so big it has more than one lower floor below the main floor.
So they went down to the basement and then they found a spot came to a dead end. Where they were hiding is like a little hallway with glass walls on the side. On the other side of the glass wall is all these bunkbeds and where the crew would sleep. They stayed there for a while and if someone that works there asks what they’re doing they’d say we are looking at where people had to sleep on the Intrepid during the war. Then they just walked away after telling them a little information. Then one of Zach’s friends came and they had to end the game.
They went back up to the main floor and found all of Zach’s friends. “Why did we stop playing?” A lot of kids were saying. No one had any answers. Everyone went up to the deck. There were planes there, as usual. Surprisingly that was the only thing they had there. But there was one thing that was wrong. Zach realized what it was, a lot of the people were on the deck. Then red lights started flashing, there was a siren wailing. Then it all stopped.
Someone thought the Intrepid might have started. There were employees everywhere. Then Zach could hear some kids chatting about playing a joke and untie the ropes that kept the Intrepid attached to the dock. Zach thought they were just messing around though. He told a couple of his friends and they started to laugh. Then some people started started screaming. They went to the side of the boat and realized we’re moving!
They then realized we might crash into land! An employee must have realized before and then we started turning and eventually we started to pull out of the dock! Someone said, “I did the best I could to make it so we didn’t crash, but sadly we are getting farther and farther away.”
Someone then shouted, “Who started the Intrepid and who would untie us from the dock!” Everyone was scared. It was chaos. People were shouting and screaming while employees tried to settle down everyone. No one would admit that they were the ones that did it. Some employees went into a room that said control room. Zach’s friends and him followed because we had many questions to be answered. But then they found the door in front of them to be locked.
They knocked on the door. They heard footsteps approaching the door. Then a security guard came out the door. They asked if we could go in and ask where we were going. The officer told them himself, “We aren’t trying to go anywhere.” He said in a deep voice, “We are trying to get back to the dock.” He then left and slammed the door behind him. Zach thought to himself this is going to be more than just a one day sleepover on the Intrepid.
Zach asked his friends if they thought anyone was coming to help us. “Probably,” said Dennis.
“Yeah why wouldn’t this,” said Jett. Zach thought they would say that, he was thinking the same as them. We were all hungry and yet they were all on the deck with just planes and no food when they could be inside the cafeteria. We were just moving on the Intrepid but we were all just standing there. The wind was blowing hard against our faces until we decided to go down to the cafeteria. They went down to the cafeteria to get some food. They all got hotdogs and sat at a table to eat. Zach sat next to Jett and Finn. Across from them were Beckett, Dennis, my Dad, and Finn’s dad. On our side was also Jett’s dad, Dennis’s dad, and Beckett’s dad. They all talked about if they thought someone would save them. The answers were yes. When we finished it was 8:00 and it was dark outside.
We asked an employee when everyone has to get into their sleeping bags. He answered in a grumpy voice, “ Ummmm 10:00.” We then walked away from the grumpy employee. I wondered what he was so grumpy about. We had nothing to do. Thankfully though in a flash it was 10:00 and we were told to go to bed.
It was early in the morning when Zach woke up. He found himself to be on the main floor of the Intrepid. In fact it was 6:00 on Saturday. And he hates waking up early on a weekend. Soon everyone was up and walking. They went down to the cafeteria to get some breakfast. Zach had a donut just like all his friends. Zach got a chocolate one just like Dennis but everyone else got a glazed donut. They went out onto the deck and the sun blinded them.
Soon Zach heard a helicopter coming. It must of been coming to get them. But there is a problem, it would take forever with one helicopter to help at least 1’000 people! But when the helicopter came into view, there was much more than one helicopter. There could have been at least 20! But they can’t all land without landing on pedestrians. Only about 5 landed, and Zach’s friends and him haven’t gotten on one.
Once those helicopters left some more landed. Then eventually more helicopters came into distance. Finally Zach could get on one of the helicopters with his Dad and some friends. They were all excited to get off the Intrepid. Then they could go home to watch tv and rest
It took at least 5 hours to get back. There were crowds near the dock. Zach got of the helicopter with his dad. Zach told his dad that he was starving, he got some of his friends to go to the restaurant. So they went to a restaurant and took a taxi back home.
