Essential Question: Using What I Wear as Political Warfare: The Power in Secondhand Sourced Personal Style
I’ve spent the past few days collecting all of my research and I realized just how much I already know about my topic from the process of putting my project together. Here’s a summary of why I think personal style is effective political warfare against the greedy and corrupt patriarchy.
History of Personal Style in Fashion: I am going to write about how fashion has been used in politics and talk about the significance of sewing machines, as well as the flapper dress.
Climate Change and Fast Fashion: I am going to write about how fast fashion came to be and why it is so detrimental to our climate.
Human Rights: This is where I write about worker rights and sweatshops.
Male Gaze in the Fashion Industry: This is where I explain who is on top (men) in both fast fashion as well as high-end fashion, however, not in a sustainable fashion. Women are not only running sustainable fashion but also have realized one of the major ways to rid ourselves of the male gaze is to dress in personal style.
Male Gaze in Everyday Life: This is where I talk about how I used to use fashion (for boys) and how that never really worked out for me. I also am going to talk about self-objectification and everyday sexism.
The science behind feeling good in what you wear: This is where I write about the dangers of caring about trends for our mental health and where I explain the actual brain activity for confidence!
Art: This is where I talk about how artists use self-expression to heal trauma.
As you can see, I already know the broad ideas of each section. Ultimately, I just have to read the articles to find important and detailed information. Additionally, while going through my pictures after researching, I realized I have continued to have the same style since I was little. I just implemented it differently back then than I do now, which makes sense because I am more mature. Here is a photo of the same look or color palette, just implemented differently. One is from 2019 and the other is from 2013. Clearly, from the photo, you can see that fashion has always been a huge factor in my life. I feel lucky to be able to do a project that implements something I am so passionate about. The next step is ultimately to learn to sew so I can take my personal style to the next level by being independent!
