Critical Reflection #4 – Kamara Duruaku

Because Nate and I are doing a podcast, we had a wide variety of sources, most of them being youtube channels and podcasts. My primary source was youtube. I watched film criticism from a plethora of sources, covering a range of movies and genres, and I tried to compare the ways in which we criticized the movies that we watched compared to those. Something that I noticed from the beginning to now is the discussion of creative choices, in terms of themes and the ways that those movies get those themes across. I mainly dived into the world of The Dark Knight film criticism, considering that it’s one of the most examined movies on the internet. I noticed that none of the reviews and examinations of the movie focused primarily on how the film was shot (in terms of clarity and shot choice). While that is important, the critiques and examinations focused mainly on the themes and character development and meaning behind the film. Nate and I have been doing mostly that. Even though we occasionally talk about shots and things like that, the bulk of our discussions have become primarily about the meanings of these movies, and how they get their point across, and whether or not they do their job.
