Sofia’s CR#3 At Eternity’s Gate

Similar to my second Critical Reflection, I want to discuss what steps during the painting process are helpful.  Yesterday I was not  motivated, maybe because I was losing confidence in my painting ability and my project as a whole. I found myself missing other art mediums that I am more prolific in like writing and film. Part of me wished that I stuck with writing and film in my comfort zone for Senior Project. But instead of dwelling on my regrets and painting that day, I looked for resources of artists that were painters and photographers. Specifically, along the lines of my essential question, I researched how photography impacts painting and how specific artists came to be.

During the process, I stumbled upon a film based on the life of Vincent Van Gogh, titled At Eternity’s Gate

The film follows the life of Van Gogh. It incorporates the impacts his mental health had on his life and the responses that people had to his work while he was alive. It was only after Van Gogh passed that he became famous. He lived a lonely life. I do not know why watching this movie inspired me, but honestly who wouldn’t be inspired by Van Gogh?

Maybe it was how the film animated his passion so intensely, or perhaps it was the way he spoke about his artistic style being of a freeing nature. Afterward, I became excited to paint and use it as an outlet as I do with other art mediums during quarantine.

My watercolor after the movie (unfinished):
