This first week I also spent a lot of time planning for the coming weeks of my project. I developed weekly themes focused on different dimensions of wellness and explored further my theme of mindfulness for week 1. I spent time on the headspace website reading articles about how to better implement mindfulness into one’s life, how mindfulness can be used for different activities one may not have considered and more. I also will be trying different mindfulness apps each week to see which I like the best and understand the world of mindfulness that is out there for consumers. This week I tried the Calm app, which features celebrity meditation series, such as a mind training course with LeBron James, as well as bedtime stories read by celebrities, and other courses focused on improving sleep or aiding anxiety. While I did not have the chance to get deep into this app, I didn’t enjoy it too much. For me, mindfulness works best when I can connect with myself and focus on what is around me, acknowledging my thoughts etc and the presence of celebrities was distracting and unnecessary for me. It was interesting and encouraging that so many celebrities were guest speakers on the app and I think they had valuable things to say – I just think this app would be better used for fun listens every once in a while instead of as an app for daily meditation practice.
