Describe your project:

With a creative mom who works in the advertising industry, I have grown up with an astute eye for advertising. I love to pay close attention to any form of advertisement whether that be package design or commercials. My senior project will take this passion further, through a deep study of the advertising world. Specifically, I will study the process of creating an advertisement and how top agencies convey a brand’s identity through visual storytelling.

At the heart of my project, it is a study of the psychology of advertising. My essential question aims to answer “What makes a successful advertisement?” I believe that in answering this question I must look at the deep human relationship to advertising. I have already witnessed the change in marketing for big companies throughout the years. It seems to me like their success has come from creating a brand that connects to the people. Brands create advertisements that communities can relate to, cry to and laugh too. While I already have thoughts about the answer to my essential question (and could potentially begin to write a compelling answer) my thoughts are not necessarily correct.

Via Zoom, I will interview people working on the creative side of advertising and gain their insight as to what makes a successful ad. My questions will relate directly to my project. I will record and transcribe these interviews into something that can be shared for my final presentation. I will either display these interviews in a directly translated format or will use quotes from my interviews in my research paper. In addition, I will use the information from my interviews and self-conducted research to create my own digital advertisements.

In the end, I hope to come out with a greater understanding of the advertising industry. Specifically, the key to success. My project will be mixed media: a research paper and print/digital advertisements. 

How will you measure succes?

Success for me will be demonstrated by my ability to articulate my thoughts towards advertising and show how my views towards the industry have been impacted by the research I will conduct. I hope to come out of this project with concrete insights on the advertising industry.

Daily plan and schedule:

I will be spending Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s researching information for my project, reading my book, taking notes from online sources and news articles and interviewing my subjects via Zoom. 

Tuesday’s and Friday’s will be dedicated to creating my advertisements. I will be taking the notes from my interviews and online research and apply them to my ads. Some advertisements may be digital and others may be physical, which I will then scan for final display. Just as a disclaimer, these days may be subject to change/ blend with one another as the days go on. 

Backup Plan:

If my project were to fall through the cracks, I would spend my senior project learning how to cook traditional meals from around the world.
