Date of Fieldwork: February 22, 2021

Person (people) with whom you met and their title(s) & Name of Organization: Jamal Young

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

Reflection:

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

In our interview with Jamal Young he said that police officers don’t have residency requirement to live in the districts they police. Because of this, the police officers are missing out on the important information about the community. If there is a racial bias in the neighborhood that the officer lives in, he or she could bring that bias to the neighborhood that they work. Jamal Young also said that police officer don’t get consequences for racially bias action. Because of this police officers don’t have to change their way of thinking because the know their not going to get in trouble for it. If we want change, we are going to need to add consequences for their action.
