What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
There is a Covid-19 reopening plan, and it’s for students with Covid-19 not to need school, but people who have recovered and not showings are allowed back in. The problem is that the schools might not be able to get that technology into everyone’s homes. One of the other problems are that some parents can’t stay home, but there is a plan where they can drop their kids off safely.
Teachers need to encourage their students to get a good working environment, because some people live in loud, busy homes or apartments. They need to interact with the students, because the isolation and not being with their friends makes school worse, so socializing will make school a better experience during this pandemic.
Every school have to have a performance evaluation plan, and that’s when they have instructional coaches to improve a team. They provide guidance for teachers to improve their work. They have a guideline that they’re expected to follow, but when they intentionally break those guidelines, they can be very easily replaced. This is only for charter schools who are unionized.
Families with too many people in the house need to get back into school, and should be close to first back into school. Here’s an example from Mr. Young. , “…It’s situational. Some kids need to be back into a building more than other kids do, and the kids who don’t need to be in a building right away are the kids who probably shouldn’t be there right away… Let’s say that there are 5 kids, and 3 of them are not of school age and they need to stay home with the babies. They have an urgent need to get out of the home.” And statistics say that domestic abuse has gone up over quarantine, so the kids who experience abuse need to get out as well.
