What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
One strategy used by anti-abortion lawmakers is to increase the cost of abortion care. They have passed TRAP Laws (Targeted Restrictions of Abortion Providers). These laws include requirements about abortion clinics. For example, if you’re providing abortion care, it has to be in a clinic that looks like an ambulatory care center with hallways that are really wide or with a certain number of closets. These laws make it very expensive for abortion providers (but not safer for patients) for abortion providers to change their buildings. Legal restrictions create, foster, and reinforce this hostile environment for abortion care and contribute to the continued stigmatization.
