What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
Evelyn’s interview was extremely helpful for our research. She taught us and told us personal stories of helping women in poverty give birth safely as well as advocate for themselves. She told us how honored she was to be able to have these stories and meet these amazing women and families. Giving birth is a very scary process, and she has been able to help many many women with this. We learned about different kinds of Doula’s, and when they’re needed. There are doula’s for giving birth (which is what Evelyn specializes in) for prenatal care, for right after the baby is born, there are breast feeding doula’s and ones that help the entire family as well as the mother. What Evelyn does specifically is make sure that women have the resources that if they chose to have a doula, they can access one regardless of race, economic status, etc. It was really inspirational meeting her, and are looking forward to possible volunteer opportunities with her.
